Back in 2020, when I took my first look through the B Corp Impact Assessment (BIA), I had to go for a cup of tea and a lie down after half an hour of trying to figure it all out.

It felt onerous, confusing and overwhelming.

This is a really common reaction. That's why hiring a trained B Consultant to help with the process of getting B Corp Certified has become a 'thing' for many businesses. Too many companies that try to go it alone either give up and put it in the 'too hard' basket, or they just can't get their score high enough to be eligible. Or they scrape through but their score is a lot less than it could have been with a little expert advice. B Consultants help with all of these issues and more.

Since that first look at the BIA, I have become a fluent B Corp speaker. Like learning anything, it's taken hundreds of hours. As part of this learning, I've completed the official B Consultancy training delivered by B Lab Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand. I've helped about 30 companies on their journey to B Corp Certification in the UK, NZ and Australia. Some have needed a huge amount of help and hand holding, other companies just need a little bit of help with a handful of sticky questions.

My 'why'

Before becoming a B Consultant, I'd had a long career in the media, starting out as a newspaper journalist here in Aotearoa before moving around the world to work in magazines and digital publishing. I've worked in Hong Kong, Osaka, Dubai, Sydney, London, and Bath.

But over the years, it was becoming painfully obvious to me that the way humans were living on this planet was driving destruction of the natural world and causing untold suffering - all justified under our current system because it was making someone money.

Getting involved in the B Corp movement has been how I've chosen to play a role in helping the world transition to a more inclusive, regenerative and equitable economic system.

We have to change and B Corp offers a roadmap for making that change. That's why I want to help as many businesses as I can become a force for good and create more positive impact in the world, while minimising their negative impacts. As well, I want to be a cheerleader for the businesses who are already B Corps and are working towards continual improvement.
